Kitchener-Waterloo Date Night Ideas: Try a Dance Class

Dinner and a movie is fine, but after a few rounds it starts to feel like a routine. If you're looking for date night ideas in Kitchener-Waterloo that are a bit more memorable, KW has plenty: a salsa or bachata class on the University of Waterloo campus, Latin socials in downtown Kitchener, a year-round market, a trail that links the two cities, and some good free options for when money is tight. Most are on the ION line, so you can leave the car at home.

The quick list

Hours, dates and prices change, so check each venue's own website before you go.

1. Take a salsa or bachata class together

A dance class is the rare date that's active, a little nerve-wracking in a good way, and repeats every week. At UW Mambo Club, beginner bachata and beginner salsa run back to back on Wednesday evenings at the University of Waterloo, so you can take one class or make it a two-hour night. Both start from the very first step, and they're open to students from any school and to the public.

It's also one of the cheapest regular dates in KW. A 10-week term is $85 for non-students, or $60 for students at any school, including UWaterloo, Laurier and Conestoga, and your first class is a free trial. That's $8.50 a class or less.

One thing to know: partners rotate every few minutes, and couples rotate too. That sounds like the opposite of a date, but it's the fastest way to get good, because you each learn to lead or follow anyone, not just each other. Our guide to adult dance classes in Kitchener-Waterloo covers how a class works, and salsa vs bachata helps you pick which to try first. Details are on our class page.

2. Go out Latin dancing in downtown Kitchener

Once you have a basic step, a social is a great date: a DJ, a friendly room, and no need to know many moves. This fall, two studios in downtown Kitchener list regular nights:

For something bigger, TenC also lists a Halloween-themed Salsa Bachata night at THEMUSEUM on Saturday, October 24, 2026. See our guide to the best places to go salsa and bachata dancing in Kitchener-Waterloo for the full rundown.

3. Saturday morning at the Kitchener Market

The Kitchener Market, at 300 King St. E, runs its farmers' market every Saturday, all year, from 7am to 2pm. Grab breakfast from a vendor, wander the stalls, and pick up ingredients to cook together that evening. It has its own ION station, so it's an easy trip from Waterloo.

4. Walk the Iron Horse Trail to Victoria Park

The Iron Horse Trail is a paved trail of roughly 5 km between Kitchener and Waterloo, maintained year-round including snow clearing, so it works in any season. Follow it into Victoria Park, Kitchener's oldest park, which opened in 1896 and has a lake you can circle by crossing its bridges. The Boathouse on the lake was completely renovated and reopened in 2024, and it hosts live music and serves local food and drinks year-round, a natural end to the walk.

5. See a film at Princess Cinemas in Uptown Waterloo

Princess Cinemas is an independent, owner-programmed cinema with two locations in Uptown Waterloo: the Princess Twin at 46 King St. N and the Original Princess at 6 Princess St. W. Expect a mix of popular mainstream films and new specialty titles you won't find at the multiplex. Check its calendar for showtimes.

6. A show at Centre In The Square, or a free gallery date

Centre In The Square, at 101 Queen St. N in downtown Kitchener, is a 2,000-seat theatre that presents over 140 shows a year, including concerts, plays and comedy.

On a tighter budget, the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery is in the same building, and admission is free. Its hours vary by day and run into the evening on some days, so check kwag.ca before you go.

7. An afternoon at THEMUSEUM

THEMUSEUM, at 10 King St. W in downtown Kitchener, runs rotating exhibitions and is a good option for a rainy weekend. It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and hours are shorter on some days, so check themuseum.ca first.

8. Skate at Carl Zehr Square in winter

Once the cold arrives, the outdoor rink at Carl Zehr Square, outside Kitchener City Hall, offers free skating, weather permitting. Victoria Park also has outdoor ice rinks in winter. The city posts the season's dates and hours on kitchener.ca. Add a hot drink afterwards and it's a classic KW winter date for close to nothing.

9. Free salsa at Waterloo Public Square in summer

When the weather warms up, there's free salsa on Thursday nights in summer at Waterloo Public Square in Uptown Waterloo, starting at 8pm. If you've taken a class or two by then, it's the perfect place to use what you learned.

Why a dance class makes the best date night in KW

Most of the ideas above are one-offs. A dance class is different:

  1. It's a standing date. Ten Wednesdays in a row, already in the calendar.
  2. You learn something together. Being beginners at the same time is a great equaliser, and it gives you something to laugh about on the way home.
  3. It's active without being a workout. An hour of stepping, turning and balancing, no gym clothes needed.
  4. It pays off everywhere else. After a term, every wedding and Latin night becomes a chance to dance together.
  5. It's inexpensive. Less than $9 a class for non-students, and less for students.

Planning a dance-class date at the University of Waterloo

Classes run on Wednesday evenings in the SLC lower atrium on the UWaterloo campus. The ION stops at University of Waterloo station, and the same line runs through Uptown Waterloo and downtown Kitchener, so you can get there from either city without a car. If you're driving, the university has paid visitor parking on weekday evenings. See its visitor parking page for current lots and rates, and our location page for directions to the room.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can turn on the floor. Our first salsa class checklist covers the rest. Then make a night of it: class first, dinner in Uptown Waterloo after.

Frequently asked questions

Do we have to sign up as a couple?

No. Sign up through the intake form like anyone else, and one of you can still come on a week the other can't.

Will we dance with each other in class?

Some of the time. Partners rotate every few minutes, so you'll dance with each other and with everyone else too.

One of us is a student and the other isn't. What do we pay?

The student pays $60, which applies to students at any school, and the non-student pays $85 per term. The first class is a free trial for each of you.

Do we need any dance experience?

No. Beginner classes start from zero.

Can we join partway through the term?

It depends on how far along the class is. Fill out the intake form or email us at uwmambo@gmail.com and we'll let you know.

Make Wednesday your date night

Every couple on a KW dance floor started with a first class. UW Mambo Club has been teaching salsa and bachata at the University of Waterloo since 2007, and we were the first to bring Latin dance classes to campus. Come to a free first class together this Wednesday, and you'll have a new date night in Kitchener-Waterloo for the rest of the term.
