Best Places to Go Salsa and Bachata Dancing in Kitchener-Waterloo

Once you've learned a basic step and a turn or two, the next question is where to actually go dancing. Kitchener-Waterloo has more options than most people expect. In a normal fall week you can take a class on the University of Waterloo campus on Wednesday, go to a social in Kitchener on Thursday, and dance again on Friday night, all without leaving KW.

Here are the best places to go salsa and bachata dancing in Kitchener-Waterloo right now, what each one is like, and who it suits. Whether you're at UWaterloo, Laurier or Conestoga, or you've lived in KW for years, there's a night that fits.

The quick list

Days and times change from season to season, so always check the organiser's own website before you head out.

1. UW Mambo Club, University of Waterloo: best place to learn first

We're biased, but every good night out dancing starts with a solid basic, and that's what we're for. UW Mambo Club has been teaching salsa and bachata at the University of Waterloo since 2007, and we were the first to bring Latin dance classes to the UWaterloo campus.

Classes run every Wednesday evening in the SLC lower atrium, with bachata right before salsa so you can take both in one night. You don't need a partner or any experience, and partners rotate every few minutes. That makes class a great warm-up for socials: by the time you walk into one, you've already danced with lots of different people.

Find the details on our class page and location page. If you're nervous, our first salsa class checklist walks you through the whole hour.

2. TenC Dance Co Thursday socials, Kitchener: best weekly social

TenC Dance Co runs a weekly 2-Room Social at its studio at 329 King St. E in Kitchener. This fall its schedule lists the social every Thursday at 8pm, with salsa, bachata, zouk and kizomba spread across two rooms. Its October schedule shows socials on October 8, 15, 22 and 29.

Zouk and kizomba aren't salsa or bachata, but a social that plays all four is a good way to see what else the KW scene dances. The studio is along the ION line, so you can get there from campus without a car.

3. Waterloo Dance Friday parties, downtown Kitchener: best Friday night out

Waterloo Dance is at 116 Queen St. N in Kitchener, across from Centre in the Square. Its social dance party runs on Friday nights at 9pm, and the studio says it's on every other Friday. The music features bachata, salsa, merengue and more, the party is open to everyone, and its instructors are there to offer guidance.

Waterloo Dance teaches ballroom dances such as waltz and tango as well as Latin. It also lists a beginner-friendly Newcomer Group class covering Latin and ballroom basics every Friday from 8:15 to 9pm, so on party nights it finishes just as the dancing starts.

4. Special events: Salsa Bachata at THEMUSEUM

Every so often, the KW scene moves somewhere bigger than a studio. Next up: TenC Dance Co lists Salsa Bachata at THEMUSEUM on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 8pm, with a Halloween theme. THEMUSEUM is at 10 King St. W in downtown Kitchener.

A bigger event can be a good first social if you're nervous: it's easy to spend the first half hour watching before you join in. Tickets and details are on TenC's events page.

5. Summer nights outdoors: Waterloo and Kitchener

When the weather warms up, Latin dance in KW goes outdoors.

Waterloo Public Square: there's free salsa on Thursday nights in summer at Waterloo Public Square, starting at 8pm.

Downtown Kitchener: in summer 2026, TenC Dance Co ran DTK Latin Heat at Carl Zehr Square, outside Kitchener City Hall, in collaboration with the City of Kitchener, from 7 to 11pm between May 22 and August 28. If you're reading this in the off-season, keep an eye on TenC's events page to see if it returns.

A sample KW dance week for students

If you're a student at UWaterloo, Laurier or Conestoga and want to get good quickly this term, here's a week that works:

  1. Wednesday: bachata and salsa at UW Mambo Club. Learn something new.
  2. Thursday or Friday: pick one social. Practise what you learned with people outside your class.
  3. Any day: five minutes of your basic step to one song. It adds up.

One class plus one social a week is plenty. Classes give you new material, and socials are where it starts to feel natural with partners you've never danced with.

Getting around KW for dance nights

You don't need a car. The ION light rail runs between Conestoga station in Waterloo and Fairway station in Kitchener, with stations including University of Waterloo, Waterloo Public Square, Kitchener City Hall and Kitchener Market. That puts campus, Uptown Waterloo and downtown Kitchener on one line. Check grt.ca for service changes before a late night out.

Frequently asked questions

Is there salsa dancing in Kitchener-Waterloo every week?

Yes. This fall there are classes at UW Mambo Club on Wednesdays, TenC Dance Co's social on Thursdays in Kitchener, and Waterloo Dance's party every other Friday in downtown Kitchener.

Do I need to know how to dance before going to a social?

It helps to know a basic step, but you don't need much. A few weeks of beginner classes is enough to enjoy a song with a partner.

Salsa or bachata: which should I learn for socials?

Both, eventually, because most KW socials play a mix. If you want to start with one, bachata gets you social-ready fastest. Read salsa vs bachata: which should you learn first? to decide.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No. At socials, people ask each other to dance one song at a time. At UW Mambo Club, partners rotate through the whole class.

I'm not a UWaterloo student. Can I learn at UW Mambo Club?

Yes. The $60-per-term student rate applies to students at any school, including Laurier and Conestoga. Non-students are welcome too, at $85 per term, and your first class is a free trial.
